Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $169,926)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Hennepin County will implement the Electronic Criminal Complaints (e-complaints) project to update the current criminal complaint process and more effectively share information across jurisdictional boundaries. The e-complaints project will be expanded to all Hennepin County police agencies. In addition, the Hennepin County Attorney's database will be modified to accept criminal complaints, petitions and other discovery elements. New applications will be developed to route, approve, and store criminal complaints and petitions. Criminal justice information will be more complete, accurate and readily available and human and financial resources will be more efficiently used. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office, thirty-three local law enforcement agencies, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, and the State of Minnesota Fourth Judicial District Court are partnering on this initiative.
