Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $849,631)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The National Judicial College (NJC) will advance justice through judicial education. They will provide training to state and local trial judges and tribal court judges who would otherwise be unable to participate, by: (1) providing funding to allow judges to attend national education programs ; (2) conducting two faculty development workshops to train judges and others to teach judges, thereby facilitating quality judicial education throughout the states; and (3) supporting curriculum analysis and development to ensure offerings are state-of-the-art and meeting the needs of today's judges as NJC develops its annual calendar.
