Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $119,414)

The Pretrial Justice Institute (PJI) seeks to address the poor conditions experienced in many tribal jails and improve those conditions by relieving the pressures caused by crowding. PJI will provide tribal justice leaders with tools to implement effective pretrial release decision making practices in order to reduce the pretrial detainee population in tribal jails that implement pretrial services. This will be accomplished through three steps: 1) educate tribal leaders about the benefits of pretrial services; 2) educate on culturally-appropriate model tribal codes relating to pretrial release decision making that reflects the culture and values of the various tribes; and 3) educate on culturally-appropriate interview forms, screening tools, and supervision protocols for use in implementing pretrial services.
