Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $318,612)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The Parents for Megan's Law, Inc. (PFML) will provide increased support to communities across the nation on issues related to sex offender registration and notification, responsible use of information, and crime victim advocacy. Through this effort, PFML will expand upon an already successful local outreach model in order to reach a national audience who may benefit from accessing the PFML website and helpline, operate a free confidential telephone service that provides support and assistance to callers who have questions and concerns regarding registered sex offenders, and respond to requests for prevention education resources and help from individuals and organizations in need of victim advocacy. To accomplish these goals, volunteers and grant funded staff will provide media outlets with information about PFML programs and services, and create prevention education materials.
