Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Venango Training & Development Center, Inc. (VTDC) will partner with Web Wise Kids (WWK) to implement the MISSING Internet Protection Program in 100 elementary, middle, and high schools in Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District. MISSING is a computer game simulation that teaches children how to recognize and repel internet predators in a safe and practical manner. VTDC will provide classroom materials for youth in grades 6, 7, and 8 and hands-on training for the teachers and others who will lead the program in the schools. VTDC and WWK will focus on delivering an effective, coordinated response to the proliferation of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation crimes against youth. They will educate youth to make wise choices when using the internet, thereby reducing or eliminating their risk of being victimized online.
