The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The City of Youngstown will continue and enhance the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force (MVLETF), a multi-jurisdictional operation with 21 local and federal member agencies that serves Mahoning and Trumbull county. Funding will be used to continue the task force and a vertical prosecution unit. The task force will take a cooperative and coordinated investigative approach to drugs, pharmaceutical diversion, firearms, gangs, violent criminal activities, and homeland security threats. MVLETF objectives are to investigate and arrest members of drug trafficking organizations and gangs, locate and arrest violent fugitives, and confiscate weapons.
