Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $430,000)
The Fund for the City of New York, Center for Court Innovation provides technical assistance to promote the implementation of problem-solving, community-based practices nationwide, focusing the energies of the justice system on achieving more meaningful outcomes for victims, communities, litigants and defendants. Through this award, the Center's Tribal Justice Exchange will have three goals: (1) ensuring that tribal communities have access to training and ongoing technical assistance about problem-solving community-based practices, including site visits to the Red Hook Community Justice Center, Midtown Community Court and other demonstration projects; (2) encouraging formal collaborations between traditional tribal justice systems and state and local court systems; and (3) identifying and disseminating best practices developed in Indian country, including peacemaking and restorative justice programs, that could help to strengthen public safety initiatives elsewhere in the U.S.
