Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $29,984)

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), in conjunction with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the JEHT Foundation, will address the issue of law enforcement's response to persons with mental illness. This will be done through IACP's National Policy Summit process. The partners will bring together over 100 professionals from the law enforcement, justice, mental illness, and advocacy communities to develop recommendations to dramatically increase law enforcement's capacities to engage those with mental illness in ways that are both safe and successful. The purpose of the summit will be to create an action agenda to approach positive resolutions to challenges for families, communities, law enforcement, and the systems of care that are designed to support those with mental illness.
