Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $469,533)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Troy Statue University will support the Computer Forensic Lab, Research and Training Initiative to help state and local law enforcement personnel develop adequate skills for handling of electronic evidence, promote awareness of computer crime, and provide research and lab services for electronic evidence analysis. The rapid change of technology and expanded use of technology in criminal activities fosters the need for properly developed law enforcement resources. They are offering immediate field assistance to law enforcement through an information sharing network of electronic crime activity, publication of training offerings, and an assistance response service to address the growing number of computer-related criminal activities. Troy State will also provide additional training events and a highly-developed computer forensics lab and research facility that will enhance law enforcement's ability to respond effectively and allocate knowledgeable resources to computer-related criminal activity.
