Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Dedicated Individually to Valiantly Assist (DIVA) International Inc. will fund the DIVA Girl Circle Fun Camp designed to encourage, embrace, and empower girls and young women of the Midlands who have been affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse to realize their full potential by providing them with comprehensive services, programs, and activities to make positive life choices. DIVA International will conduct the following activities: educate girls and young women from at-risk environments of the characteristics of a violent relationship; provide resources and outreach assistance for at least half of the participants; sponsor camps, field trips, and other activities; provide volunteer and work experience and employment assistance for young women; conduct domestic violence related workshops; and conduct assessments of each activity.
