Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $433,052)

The University of North Dakota School of Law, Tribal Judicial Institute will continue to offer and coordinate the technical assistance and training for the Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP). The Institute will help develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide funding for technical assistance and training of tribal court staff. The project will expand its training curriculum by providing an additional 15 training events, including two regional events exclusively for Alaska tribes that have received TCAP grants or are interested in receiving those grants and have either been unsuccessful or not applied. The Institute will provide additional scholarship funds for impoverished Tribes interested in attending the National Indigenous Justice conference to be held in October of 2008 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the Common Ground conference in California in December of 2008. In addition, the Institute will utilize the funding to continue its law school intern program through which law students at the University of North Dakota law school provide legal research and assistance to TCAP grantees. The Institute will also continue the TCAP advisory board, as well as meeting with BJA staff on a semi-annual basis to coordinate the delivery of services.
