Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $205,253)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Luna County Sheriff's Department will enhance law enforcement preparedness and operational readiness in Southern New Mexico. They will purchase the necessary equipment for the Luna County Sheriff's Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department, Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department, Grant County Sheriff's Department, Otero County Sheriff's Department, Deming Police Department, Columbus Police Department, Lordsburd Police Department, and Sunland Park Police Department. Equipment provided will aid in increasing the ability of local law enforcement in Southern New Mexico border area cities and counties to: 1) reduce crime in border communities and consequently improve the quality of life and economic vitality of the area; 2) apprehend and deter smugglers of humans, drugs, and other contraband; and 3) increase the probability of apprehending terrorists and their weapons as they attempt to illegally enter the United States.
