Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The City of Madison will establish a Gang and Violent Crime Intervention Project, an extension of an ongoing records management system collaboration between 17 regional law enforcement partners and municipal court agencies in Dane County. The Gang and Violent Crime Intervention Project will facilitate a more effective review, analysis, and integration of law enforcement data in order to identify emerging gang and violent crime trends and solve them in a timely manner. To accomplish this, the City of Madison will employ a problem-solving analyst who will be trained to use various software applications and databases, provide accurate data in a usable format to command staff and field personnel, analyze criminal activities, identify emerging trends, and potentially assist in solving crimes. In addition, the analyst will also review data to determine social and economic impacts of gang and violent crimes on citizens and businesses in the targeted communities and the potential impact on law enforcement.
