Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,425)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The County of Arlington will support their GED Program that provides access and support for recently released inmates from the Arlington County Detention Facility. They will assist ex-offenders continue and complete GED studies that began during incarceration. They will provide learning space outside the detention facility, teacher aides for one-on-one assistance, computer laboratory time, and access to the same GED preparation software used during incarceration. Obtaining the GED degree improves job prospects for inmates reentering the community and reduces the likelihood of a return to jail.
