Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $297,371)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Montana Supreme Court will use the grant funds to assist the Montana criminal justice system in controlling the state's crime and drug problem through the implementation and maintenance of drug treatment courts. The project goals are to: reduce recidivism of drug court participants; retain drug court participants in drug court for one year; establish and maintain an acceptable graduation rate; and increase the personal, family, and society accountability of drug court participants. The Montana Supreme Court will also ensure uniform quality in the operation of the drug courts.
