Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Utah Sheriffs' Association, Inc. (USA) will enhance their web-based jail inspection system and provide training on established standards. USA will pay for offsite data back-up and recovery services for their web-based jail inspection system. This will provide increased data security and reliability that is necessary to accommodate the data growth experienced since the system's launch. USA will also implement a Jail Commanders Certification Program. This program will provide regional training and certification to jail commanders and sheriffs from all counties in Utah and an opportunity to teach knowledge beyond written directives. USA will also support their ongoing inspection and audit program, which requires outside verification by jail inspectors, maintenance, and technical support.
