Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy will provide state-of-the-art training to the Rhode Island Law Enforcement community through the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy (RIMPA) and the newly created School of Community Policing and Cultural Diversity (SCPCD). Through SCPCD, they will provide training that will focus on the following community policing and problem solving; police/race community relations/understanding racial profiling; and integration of the war veteran/police reservist. Progress towards these goals will be assessed through the use of a needs assessment designed and provided by the Roger Williams University School of Justice Studies (Training and Research Institute). Additionally, SCPCD staff will review participant evaluations on a regular basis to evaluate the success of the trainings.
