Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $1,162,653)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Butler County Community College (BCCC) will integrate the existing training for first responders and municipal/industry workers so that they can respond quickly to emergencies by coordinating resources, communication, and management. They will provide extensive cross training and joint exercises in the classroom, hands-on experiential learning, and realistic chaotic scenarios that prepare them to work with each other in disaster related conditions. BCCC will train first responders to be able to restore transportation and municipal services to major evacuation routes as soon as possible after a crisis. This will help mitigate the ramifications of a trapped and panicked public if these routes are ever attacked. BCCC will provide coordinated training for hazardous materials (HAZMAT), fire, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) personnel teams to respond efficiently and effectively to emergencies.
