Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $335,381)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office will build and develop an Intelligence Led Policing unit to address organized criminal activity affecting the Parish of Ascension. They will implement Project SAFE GUARD to provide law enforcement officers and agencies in Ascension Parish prompt access to crucial information on criminals, gangs, and organizations to increase their effectiveness to respond to any event or crime that occurs in their communities. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office will use new technologies, procedures, and analysis, develop standards operating procedures, and provide a continuous self-assessment of the criminal intelligence function to improve their ability to address criminal activity. They will maintain a methodology for descriptive analysis of crime patterns, repeat offenders, and organized crime enterprises. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office will identify and maintain information concentrated on habitual offenders and criminal enterprises such as organized street gangs and businesses used as a front for criminal activity.
