Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $201,228)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Asheville Police Department (APD) will purchase simulator training equipment to reduce the number of improper or excessive use of force situations and officer involved accidents by upgrading officer's realistic training. It is anticipated that the simulator training will significantly reduce the number of liability claims and continue to reduce the number of claims in the future. The simulator provides realistic scenario situations allowing officers to properly choose the best course of action, without injury. APD will provide train officers annually and as needed for remedial situations. They will better prepare officers in use of force scenarios as well as emergency responses which will result in improved public safety.
