Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $500,000)

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) will continue to operate Project ChildSafe, a firearms safety education program. The goal of Project ChildSafe is to reach firearms owners with key safe storage messages and free gun locking devices through law enforcement partnerships. This effort continues to raise awareness about how secure storage procedures can prevent tragic accidents, particularly among children. Through Project ChildSafe, NSSF distributes free gun locking devices and educational materials on a first-come, first-served basis to gun owners through law enforcement agencies and state partnerships involving governors, lieutenant governors, U.S. Attorneys, and other concerned groups. Law enforcement partners who receive the gun lock safety kits will continue to make the safety kits and additional educational materials available to gun owners free of charge in their communities. NSSF will continue its public awareness outreach to both promote the continued distribution of available locks and to remind gun owners who have already received locks to continue to practice safe storage and use of their firearms.
