Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $75,125)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Sheriffs Association of New Jersey will support the completion of the New Jersey Law Enforcement Accreditation Program for 17 New Jersey sheriff departments. Accreditation is a progressive and time-proven method of improving law enforcement accountability and performance. The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police will sponsor and oversee the development of the accreditation program. The goals of the accreditation program are to ensure that sheriff departments meet the highest standards of professionalism; improve the effectiveness and efficiency in delivery of law enforcement services; ensure accountability; and ensure established standards are met.
