Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $300,000)

The National American Indian Court Judges Association's (NAICJA) National Tribal Justice Resource Center will provide technical assistance and training through a strategy of collaboration and communication. NAICJA will implement a clearinghouse function for Native American and Alaska Native tribal judicial systems that will enhance their development and continued successful improvement in delivering justice. The Resource Center will provide technical assistance to tribal justice systems through technological and non-technological methods to enhance court functions in order to maintain and strengthen tribal sovereignty and to ensure judicial autonomy and independence. The core functions of the Resource Center are: 1) a clearinghouse that collects and publishes technical and legal resources and provides website links that benefit tribal judicial systems; 2) technical assistance to tribal courts, utilizing collaboration and communication with the other Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) partners; 3)technical assistance for tribal drug courts and peacemaker courts; and, 4) the publication of training manuals and Indian law materials for use by tribal courts.
