Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $536,609)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office is the fiduciary agency for the Northwest Virginia Regional Gang Task Force (Gang Task Force). The Gang Task Force will continue its anti-gang programs to focus on eradicating gang violence in the counties of Frederick, Warren, Clarke, Shenandoah, Page, the City of Winchester, and the Town of Front Royal. The Gang Task Force counters gang-related violence and property crimes in the region by utilizing numerous resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute gang offenders; work closely with federal agencies to: identify, investigate, and prosecute gang members responsible for violent crimes; and to gather and disseminate intelligence information through the Uniform Crime Reporting System and other databases. The project: promotes gang awareness by conducting presentations developed for schools, hospitals, law enforcement, and civic organizations; trains Gang Task Force investigators in advanced and specialized gang-enforcement areas; and, documents gang offenders.
