Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $424,815)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Washington County Department of Health and Human Services will use the grant funds to support the Washington County Drug Court. The grant funds will pay for a drug court coordinator and treatment services. The drug court will serve high-risk, chemically dependent adults (primarily methamphetamine). The project has three overall goals: (1) ensure successful transition of offenders from custody into the drug treatment court program; (2) assist participants to remain engaged and complete the drug treatment court program; and (3) increase abstinence and reduce criminal activity of participants. Grant funds will also be used to support participants in the Women with Children Drug Treatment Court program. The project is a subset of a larger drug treatment court program and serves women whose children have been removed from their home due to criminal activity and child neglect resulting from drug abuse.
