Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $335,381)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) will implement the CPCC Digital Forensics Project to improve the capacity of the criminal justice system to reduce the incidence of cyber crimes. They will ensure that local law enforcement has access to a continuously expanding cadre of trained and certified cyber crime investigators. CPCC will establish a regional training center supplied the hardware and software needed to train current and aspiring investigators to collect digital evidence from computers, PDAs, iPods, cell phones, and pagers. The availability of a local training center will substantially reduce training costs for public and private investigators, and CPCC faculty in the surrounding areas.
