Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $357,739)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Duquesne University will identify and mitigate cyber-security threats that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMES) face on a daily basis as they participate in a growing number of business partnerships and supply chains. The sub-populations to be addressed include manufacturing, telecommunications, transportation, banking & finance, and health care. Cyber-security among SMES is of key importance because of vulnerabilities due to high cost and lack of knowledge which could be the cause of catastrophic supply chain shutdowns. The Duquesne University will conduct outreach to create awareness and enable organizations to manage their cyber-security challenges across the state and nation.
