Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $951,434)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Vermont Department of Public Safety will continue the successful existence of the Vermont Drug Task Force (VTDTF) and it's statewide initiatives against illegal drugs and the constantly developing trends that surround them. VTDTF is a specialized law enforcement unit consisting of both state and local officers who serve the entire population of Vermont in the fight against illegal drugs. VTDTF will strive to reduce the presence of illegal drugs in Vermont and the destructive influences they have on rural communities. They will constantly re-shape their initiatives to meet the threat of new drug trends and reduce the incidences of the commonly recognized ones such as cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, opiates, and marijuana.
