Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $254,889)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology, (NJIT) will design and implement a full featured personalized weapons prototype. The program entails three sets of technical effort: design and implementation of disabling mechanism, integration to the embedded electronics, and live firing tests. This technology will be commercialized and transition handgun safety into an electronic era. NJIT will develop an optimal disabling mechanism by considering performance, cost, power, the impact to gun construction, and marketability; design and implement the disabling mechanism; test prototype for performance, reliability, and user experience; and commercialization.
