The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The city of Chillicothe will use the grant funds to retain the assistant law director position and establish a part-time support position for their domestic violence prosecution program. The assistant law director will continue to be responsible for the development and prosecution of domestic violence and related criminal cases. The support staff person will assist in preparing cases for trial. In addition, law enforcement officers will be provided additional training related to effective responses to and prosecution of domestic and dating violence. The city of Chillicothe will continue the development of a system to ensure that databases are synchronized; reports are regularly disseminated; and protection orders are tracked and reported in real time to those needing the information.
