Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $150,000)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive Program: National Initiatives, administered by the Office of Justice Programs' Bureau of Justice Assistance, furthers the Department's mission by assisting state and local jurisdictions in improving the criminal justice system and assisting communities in preventing drug abuse and crime. In FY 2008, the program will focus on funding local, regional, and national efforts within five major categories: 1) preventing crime and drug abuse; 2) enhancing local law enforcement; 3) enhancing local courts; 4) enhancing local corrections and offender reentry; and 5) facilitating justice information sharing.
The National Sheriffs'Association (NSA) will implement this project under category 2: enhancing local law enforcement. NSA will develop an electronic resource database to serve as a clearinghouse of information on law enforcement contracts for criminal justice and municipal officials across the nation. The database will include how-to manuals and toolkits on contractual services, as well as analyses on the advantages and challenges associated with contracts and contact information for subject matter experts who may provide guidance. Once completed, the database will be accessible through NSA's existing website. The project will be overseen and guided by an advisory group within NSA.
