Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $1,000,000)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive Program: National Initiatives, administered by the Office of Justice Programs' Bureau of Justice Assistance, furthers the Department's mission by assisting state and local jurisdictions in improving the criminal justice system and assisting communities in preventing drug abuse and crime. In FY 2008, the program will focus on funding local, regional, and national efforts within five major categories: 1) preventing crime and drug abuse; 2) enhancing local law enforcement; 3) enhancing local courts; 4) enhancing local corrections and offender reentry; and 5) facilitating justice information sharing.
The SEARCH Group Incorporated will implement the Operational Information Sharing Systems Support Technical Assistance and Training project under category 5: facilitating justice information sharing. They will provide technical assistance, training, information and performance measurement resources, data and training models, and support to enhance the capabilities of justice practitioners to combat cybercrime. The SEARCH Group will address two critical problem areas: (1) the need to share information among justice and public safety organizations to better support prediction, prevention, and response to all crimes and hazards, and terrorist events; and (2) the need to effectively combat the pervasive and continuing threat of cybercrime, particularly Internet-based crime.
