Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $200,000)

The Council of State Governments/American Probation and Parole Association (CSG/APPA) will continue its initiative to effectively include probation and parole agencies in the effort to combat gang and gun crime through involvement in Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) task forces. PSN is a comprehensive, strategic approach to reducing gun crime in America. By linking together federal, state, and local law enforcement, prosecutors, and community leaders, PSN provides a multifaceted approach to deterring and punishing gun crime.

CSG/APPA will develop model protocols for the supervision of offenders involved in gang and gun violence. In addition, they will provide to probation and parole officers and agencies: phone, onsite, and internet-based training and technical assistance on PSN initiatives. These efforts will improve the supervision of violent and gang offenders and enhance training regarding federal firearms laws and search and seizure protocols. CSG/APPA will continue to help identify the most important issues facing probation and parole officers as they experience a shift in the expectations of their roles as justice agents to a more proactive, focused approach to community supervision. CSG/APPA will continue to actively participate in PSN anti-gang initiatives and provide supplemental training, as requested.
