Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $100,029)

The University of North Dakota School of Law, Tribal Judicial Institute continues to offer and coordinate the technical assistance and training for the Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP). The Institute helps develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide funding for technical assistance and training of tribal court staff. The Institute will expand its training curriculum to include a training session specifically for tribal elected leaders on the role of tribal justice systems and the separation of powers between those systems and tribal executive and legislative bodies. This training will target tribal leaders from federally recognized Indian tribes that operate tribal justice systems that either have a constitutional separation of powers provision in their Constitution or who do not have such in their systems.
