Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $13,594)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Brunswick will use Fiscal Year 2008 JAG funds for the enhancement of its Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Planning and Research. The CID of the Brunswick Police Department is currently in need of a cyanoacrylate fuming chamber to assist with the retrieval of latent print evidence. Obtaining a CyanoSafe' Filtered Cyanoacrylate Fuming Chamber will result in an increased capacity to retrieve latent prints due to the overall accuracy of the instrument. The unit meets and exceeds OSHA and ANSI Z9.5 standards and guidelines. Additionally, JAG funds will be used to upgrade and purchase equipment that will enable the department to operate an added interview room. The Administrative Division's planning and research department is currently in need of a copier. Hundreds of pages per month are being copied or printed using only an Hp Office Printer; which does not have the capability to print large quantities at one time or collate copies. Therefore, the funds will be used to purchase a Minolta CF2002 reconditioned copier.
