Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $17,298)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions of the City of Muncie and the County of Delaware will utilize their Fiscal Year 2008 Justice Assistance Grant award in the amount of $17,298 to provide overtime for police officers in both jurisdictions in the Enhanced Patrol Program. The City of Muncie will be responsible for administering the funds as the fiscal agent. The Muncie Police Department will receive $10,000 and the Delaware County Sheriff's Department will receive $7,298. Project activities include, but are not limited to, holdovers, shift extensions, emergencies such as homicides and natural tragedies, trainings, meetings outside of working hours, briefings, roll calls, holidays, call backs to duty, court appearances, traffic control, and public safety at community events. The two jurisdictions will coordinate when situations develop and additional assistance is needed. Visible police presence in the community will provide a safer environment for all citizens of the City of Muncie and the County of Delaware.
