Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $64,258)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The City of Montgomery will use its Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 JAG award for the Security and Communications Project. The goal of the project is to advance the department's technological capabilities by properly equipping the entire building with security systems and technology upgrades. The Montgomery Police Department will take 60% and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office will be the recipient of 40%. The Sheriff's Office will purchase DVRs' for the jail to increase the video archive capabilities and replace the globes with clear tamper resistant safety domes. The Montgomery Police Department will use funds to install a rudimentary alarm system that will be expanded and upgraded over time. Security at the outdoor range facility has become increasingly more important as more personnel and equipment are being assigned to that location.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office will purchase radio equipment, security and evidence equipment to be used by Court Security and Patrol Division.
