Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $66,393)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions of the county of Forsyth and the city of Winston-Salem will utilize their Fiscal Year 2008 JAG award in the amount of $66,393 for law enforcement purposes. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office will use its portion of the JAG funds ($33,196.50) to acquire the following items: an internet based application permitting citizens to search information posted by the agency such as accident reports, daily bulletins, and missing persons, and to report basic incidents; a television; and a desktop computer integrated with the Sheriff's Office's automatic vehicle locator technology and dispatch system.
The Winston-Salem Police Department will use its portion of the award ($33,196.50) to purchase a high-density mobile shelving system to double the storage capacity for various types of property, such as firearms, files, and packaging. They will also acquire a Fingerprint Development Chamber for the Forensic Service Division to minimize the risk of exposure to toxic fumes when collecting evidence.
