Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $24,476)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
With Fiscal Year 2008 JAG funding, Beaufort County will connect all public safety personnel through wireless hot spots installed in various locations throughout the county. JAG funding will allow the county to install eleven of these wireless hot spots. The hot spots will allow personnel to receive updated information quickly through WebOC, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). WebOC is an internet/intranet program that gives Beaufort County personnel the capability to communicate with other county, regional, and state personnel during emergency operations. CAD is used to communicate with the 911 Dispatch Center to report incidents, status of calls, and duty location. NCIC is utilized by 911 Dispatch to query background data on suspects for prior criminal history. This technology will give Beaufort County public safety personnel the ability to maximize real-time data, allowing them to provide a swift response while maintaining the safety of the citizens and county personnel.
