Project Safe Neighborhoods

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN task force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Kansas Metropolitan Crime Commission, serving as the fiscal agent for the Western District of Missouri, will use the grant to continue to support the prosecution of federal firearms violations and gangs, a youth after-school and summer program, and graffiti abatement services. The Independent Police Department will continue to provide one detective to the ATF PSN task force and two Special Assistant United States Attorneys (SAUSAs) for Green and Platte Counties to focus on gang-related prosecutions and subdue the methamphetamine drug problem. Break N'Build Phase II's POSSE (Peers Organized to Support Student Excellence) Program is an after-school, summer youth leadership development program at Northeast and other high schools, which establishes a partnership between teachers, parents, police, and school resource officers for youth threatened by gang influence. Old Northeast, Inc is a community development corporation that works closely with Northeast Kansas City neighborhoods. Grant funds will be used to provide paint-over services for homes of the elderly or those incapable of removing graffiti from their property. Gang intelligence from graffiti markings will be provided to Kansas City Police Department police partners.
