Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $107,800)

This award is made under the FY 2008 Tribal Courts Assistance Program and it supports the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal justice systems. Allowable elements under the program may include, but are not limited to: establishing a core structure for a tribal court; improving case management; training court personnel; acquiring additional equipment and/or software; enhancing prosecution and indigent defense; supporting probation diversion and alternative sentencing programs; accessing services; focusing on juvenile services and multi disciplinary protocols for child physical and sexual abuse; and structuring intertribal or tribal appellate systems.

The Blackfeet Tribe will use fiscal year 2008 Tribal Courts Assistance Program Category III Enhancing the Operation of Tribal Courts funds to support capacity building activities. The three activities supported by the grant are: codifying the Blackfeet Tribal Law and Order Code during year one; providing trainings for judges, lay prosecutors, defenders, and court clerks; and purchasing equipment. Tribal law and code updates will include converting existing codes into a consistent digital format that may be published in a book format, codifying existing code, recommending changes or solutions to any disparities within the code, and recommending additional titles that will augment the Blackfeet Tribal Law and Order Code. The Blackfeet Tribal Court will also purchase two copy machines for the office.
