Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $132,945)
The Planning Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Competitive Grant Program assists tribes in developing strategies to cost effectively plan facilities associated with the incarceration and rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders subject to tribal jurisdiction. Careful planning is critical to ensure that correctional facilities, when completed, are appropriately designed for the intended population, supportive of cultural and traditional values, safe and secure when completed, and in compliance with Bureau of Indian Affairs' standards regarding correction operations, programs and design.
The Pascua Yaqui Tribe will use grant funds to create a master plan that will address current and future tribal public safety and detention needs. The Detention Division has experienced a dramatic growth over the past several years. The existing detention facility does not have adequate housing to keep up with the growth. Issues of integrating and contracting services will be examined. The Executive Committee will serve as the project planning team and be the focal point for the overall planning process. The group will review all reports and data prepared by the project coordinator and correctional planner. The Executive Committee will identify areas in which more in-depth study is needed. The committee will review all interim and final reports and make recommendations to the Tribal Council.
