Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $500,000)
The Renovation of Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Discretionary Grant Program assists tribes in developing strategies to cost effectively construct or renovate existing facilities associated with the incarceration and rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders subject to tribal jurisdiction. Careful planning is critical to ensure that new and renovated correctional facilities are appropriately designed for the intended population, supportive of cultural and traditional values, safe and secure when completed, and in compliance with Bureau of Indian Affairs' standards regarding correctional operations, programs, and design.
The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Reservation will use funds to upgrade and expand the Sisseton-Wahpeton Detention Center. Planned improvements will include expanding the facility to include space for the Tribal Court and additional holding cells. Upgrades will include new indoor and outside lighting, security doors, fence, and sprinkler system. Renovations to the booking and lodging areas are also planned.
