Projects to Assist America's Law Enforcement Surviving Families to Rebuild Their Shattered Lives

The Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) National Office provides peer support to families who have suffered the loss of a fallen law enforcement officer. C.O.P.S. provides educational information to law enforcement agencies and officials regarding death notification, support at the hospital, assistance during the wake and funeral, assistance with benefits, and continued follow-up to be done in a sensitive and organized manner. C.O.P.S. informs agencies about the federal death benefit claim processes and programs that help survivors heal, relieving a perceived burden on agency personnel. C.O.P.S also provides survivors with information in a manner that avoids secondary psychological injuries to the surviving families of fallen officers. Funding from this grant will support: the National Police Survivors' Conference; seven survivor-specific weekend retreats: speaking engagements at law enforcement and victims' conferences; quarterly newsletters for survivors and law enforcement contacts; semi-annual newsletters for law enforcement leaders nationwide; seven yearly sessions of the 'Traumas of Law Enforcement' training; costs associated with the 'Fly The Blue' ribbon project; other important mailings; and support for surviving family members.
