Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $415,024)
The Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN) program ensures victims of crime receive accurate and timely information regarding the status of offenders and events related to their case. Through SAVIN, victims are able to participate in the judicial process and make sound decisions to protect themselves from further victimization while maintaining total anonymity. This information-sharing capability is also available to courts, corrections, and law enforcement officials.
The State of Louisiana will use the FY 2008 Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN) award to expand its notification system to include information from its Protective Order Registry. The grant will give the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement the ability to notify victims when a Protective Order is served and this, in turn, will enable the victims to take the precautionary security measures they feel maybe necessary. The Louisiana Protective Order Registry (LPOR) operates statewide in all 64 parishes and covers 100% of the State's population. Over the past three years, LPOR received an average of 19,411 protective orders per year. The goal of the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement is protecting a previously underserved population of the State's crime victims by providing critical information to victims of crime and other concerned parties when their offender is served with a protection order. The Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement will maintain its role of grant recipient and managing agency with responsibility for the oversight of the project. The Commission will work with the Louisiana Supreme Court, the Department of Corrections, the Louisiana District Attorneys Association, and the parish jails to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated delivery of victim services throughout the Louisiana criminal justice process.
