Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $186,300)
The Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN) program ensures victims of crime receive accurate and timely information regarding the status of offenders and events related to their case. Through SAVIN, victims are able to participate in the judicial process and make sound decisions to protect themselves from further victimization while maintaining total anonymity. This information-sharing capability is also available to courts, corrections, and law enforcement officials.
The State of Nebraska will use the FY 2008 Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN) award to expand its notification system to be able to inform a crime victim of the offender's court case events and to inform victims when a Protective Order is served. The expansion of the system will cover the events of all offenders in the county and State correctional facilities. The SAVIN grant funds will also allow for victims in the State's large immigration populations from Vietnam and Sudan to be included in this expansion of the system's activities. The Nebraska notification system presently serves more than 17,875 victims of crime, families, law enforcement officials and other interested parties; all of whom will be included in the expansion of the notification capabilities. The Nebraska Crime Commission (NCC) will assume the role of grant recipient and managing agency with responsibility for the oversight of the project. The NCC will work with the NE Criminal Justice Information Systems Advisory Committee to ensure consistency for registrations and notifications, and economies through coordination of project activities, and will keep the Nebraska Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Coalition and the Nebraska Coalition for Crime Victims advised of the progress of the enhancements to the notification system. Finally, the NCC will continue to monitor the program as it moves beyond the grant period into sustainment.
