Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $499,897)

The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA), in partnership with the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) will implement the National Animal Cruelty and Fighting Initiative for the Prevention and Reduction of Violent Crime. APA will accomplish these goals through the following: (1) disseminate information concerning the most innovative and evidence-based initiatives aimed at stopping animal cruelty and animal fighting through its listserv, publications, website and technical assistance; (2) increase the knowledge base about animal cruelty and animal fighting cases by providing at least four trainings (one national conference and three by distance learning mechanisms); and (3) convene an advisory group meeting to refine the training curriculum and to identify additional ways to strengthen links between the community and criminal justice system in an effort to prevent precursor crimes such as animal cruelty and animal fighting, which often lead to more violent crime such as child abuse and domestic violence. APA will coordinate with the Bureau of Justice Assistance and AWI to discuss assigned tasks and timelines for deliverables to be completed under the award. NCA/NCF
