Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $195,370)

The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The program supports the following activities: adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court implementation, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.

The Florida Office of the State Courts Administrator will use the statewide drug court grant to support a process and outcome evaluation, distance learning training modules, and drug court coordinators' training. The goal of a statewide evaluation is to educate the judicial, legislative, and executive branch stakeholders about drug court efficacy compared to a 'business as usual' approach to drug and alcohol addicted defendants. The statewide evaluation will help to substantiate funding of drug courts and provide information that can assist Florida with enhancing its drug court efforts. Results of the evaluation will be utilized to improve drug court operations. In addition to the process evaluation, the project will initiate an outcome and impact evaluation to measure any changes observed in the participants due to the influence of the drug court. The drug court training content will be based on the key components and promising practices in the drug court field.
