Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $342,958)
The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The program supports the following activities: adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.
Berrien County will use Drug Court Discretionary Grant Category I funding to support the implementation of a drug treatment court that integrates intensive judicial supervision and interaction, substance abuse treatment, sanctions, and incentives for nonviolent drug offenders in an effort to help them become productive members of the community. Program length would be approximately 15 months. A broad continuum of services, to include intensive individual and family outpatient services, residential services, support groups, mental health treatment, faith-based services, social service, and relapse prevention will be provided. Current drug court staff will be utilized in the delivery of the program due to their expertise and level of commitment needed to provide the best possible opportunity for offenders to rehabilitate their lives.
