Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $424,815)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe will continue to support their Sicangu Youth Diversion Program to prevent crime, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, dropout rates, and suicide among tribal youth. The program will provide additional youth mentoring, life skills and communication training; problem solving education; and depression, stress, and anger management education. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe will provide beneficial treatment programs for troubled youth and provide family counseling and other social services to tribal members. They will implement significant enhancements to the Sicangu Youth Diversion Program to impact and improve the overall Rosebud Sioux Tribe's Juvenile Justice System and help with the effectiveness and efficiency of all juvenile programs within their tribal areas.
